Financial Controller

True North Log Homes Inc. is looking for an exceptional accounting and finance professional to join our team and take the lead in overseeing all financial and administrative functions across the True North Log Homes Group of Companies. Reporting directly to the President, the Financial Controller acts as the Senior Financial Advisor to the President and the Shareholders and is accountable for ensuring that all financial controls and accounting best practices are in place and appropriately maintained. Leading our Finance and Administrative Departments, the Financial Controller provides essential financial information and reporting to the rest of the Leadership Group, which is crucial in enabling strategic business decisions. Responsibilities:

  • Implements financial mechanisms to sustain year-over-year growth in all lines of business within the Group of Companies and takes accountability for the numbers and financial results of the business.
  • Manages accounting operations and ensures the accuracy of financial data by collaborating with external accounting firms and reporting any identified issues to the President.
  • Leads monthly and annual forecasting processes and analyzes budget performance; delivering presentations on financial reporting to the President and Shareholders.
  • Performs detailed job costing analyses and identifies cost optimization and revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Ensures the accuracy of costs related to production and evaluates the Production Department’s financial performance.
  • Oversees the payroll and sales commissions process for all Companies, reviewing all entries to ensure accuracy and reporting any errors to the appropriate manager.
  • Checks all Company bank accounts daily and processes funds, including invoicing, updating reconciliation, managing cash flow, posting journals, informing employees, and updating flash reports.
  • Oversees all Companies' weekly accounts payables process, ensuring that all payments are processed accurately and on time.
  • Works closely with the Sales Team to complete the monthly closing process.
  • Recommends initiatives to the President and Shareholders to prepare the Company for tax efficiencies before year-end; coordinates with auditors and implements audit recommendations.
  • Recruits, trains, mentors and develops finance and administrative professionals within the Finance and Administration team.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in a similar senior financial role in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) Designation, or actively pursuing is considered an asset.
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting processes and Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Strong leadership and management skills to mentor and develop team members and oversee departmental operations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to ensure the accuracy of financial data, monitor key financial metrics, identify cost optimization and revenue enhancement opportunities, analyze budget performance, assess potential scenarios using financial modelling techniques, evaluate financial risks, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Must be proficient in financial management software and tools, including accounting software, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, financial simulation models, and Power BI, to manage accounting operations, prepare financial statements and reports, and manage job costing reports.
  • Strategic thinking and planning skills to lead monthly and annual forecasting processes, develop financial strategy, manage capital structure, evaluate financing options, and coordinate the financial planning and budget process with the Leadership Group.
  • Exceptional and meticulous attention to detail in handling highly sensitive business information.
  • Familiarity with U.S and/or U.K accounting and tax regulations would be desirable, but not needed for consideration for this role.
